The honeymoon season, which picks up steam from mid-October and continues till March, contributes 15-20 % to the total outbound leisure traffic from India. The report said outbound traffic to South-east Asia and South Asia surges by around 30 percent during this period.
“We expect growth in the outbound honeymoon travel to be around 27 percent, up from the 18 percent growth last year,” Travel Agents Federation of India president Praveen Chugh told the newspaper.
“People are continuing to gravitate towards South-east Asian destinations, though places like New Zealand and Egypt are also becoming increasingly popular.”
Chugh said the fast-growing GDP and booming stock market are contributing to the optimism.
“At this time of the year, most people prefer to head to places in the southern hemisphere as it’s summer there. So, places like New Zealand and Australia are doing well,” Tourism New Zealand India manager Kiran Nambiar was quoted saying.
Tourism Malaysia is positioning the islands of Langkawi, Penang and Pangkor for Indian honeymooners looking for a beach getaway. A fifth of the 280,000 arrivals from India last year were honeymooners.
“The trend indicates that newlyweds are now opting for experiential packages and are more ready to try new things, be it soft adventure with night safaris, self-drive packages and eco-tourism trails,” TRAC Representations associate director Rajeev Nangia was quoted saying.
