The expansion of India’s tourist visa-on-arrival (VoA) scheme in November 2014 has already produced results, with massive increase in terms of VoAs issued in December 2014.
In total, 14,083 tourist VoAs were issued last month, compared to just 2,700 in December 2013, marking a growth rate of 421.6%.
The USA was the top source market for the new visa system, accounting for 24.3% of all VoAs issued in December. Russia was second (15.1% of the total), followed by South Korea (11.0%), Ukraine (8.2%), Australia (8.0%), New Zealand (5.1%), Japan (4.3%), Singapore (4.3%), Germany (4.1%) and the Philippines (3.1%). Two of India’s biggest source markets, the UK and Canada, were not included in the scheme.
New Delhi was the top airport for tourist VoAs (35.8% of the total), ahead of Mumbai (21.1%), Goa (18.2%), Chennai (7.2%), Bengaluru (5.8%), Kochi (4.5%), Hyderabad (3.1%), Kolkata (2.4%) and Thiruvananthapuram (2.0%).
For the full year, India issued a total of 39,046 tourist VoAs, 92.4% more than in 2013.
