The tourist helpline set up by India’s Ministry of Tourism last month has already received more than 17,900 calls, officials have revealed.
The new helpline was launched on 8 February and by 20 March it had handled 17,911 requests for assistance and information from tourists, marking an average of almost 578 calls per day.
Launched by India’s Minister of Tourism, Culture & Civil Aviation, Dr Mahesh Sharma, the new “Toll Free Tourist Infoline” is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in 12 languages: English, Hindi, Arabic, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
It main objective is to provide information related to travel and tourism in India, as well as helping travellers in distress and, if required, alerting the authorities. This forms part of the Indian government’s drive to improve the safety of tourists in the country.
A new mobile app is also being launched help tourists, and the Incredible India website will be revamped to make it “more tourist-friendly”.
