At least seven people died after a fire broke out on a passenger ferry travelling between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra, Channel NewsAsia reported Indonesia’s Transport Ministry as saying today. The ferry caught fire in the Sunda Strait, shortly after leaving the port of Merak, Java, at around 3.30am this morning. It was unclear how many people were onboard the ferry at the time. The cause of the fire is yet to be established, but local media initially reported that the ferry “exploded”.
