An industry leader in Sri Lanka has urged for a policy tack which will shift focus from long-haul markets to regional tourism. Speaking to Daily News Business the Tourist Hotels Association of Sri Lanka President Anura Lokuhetti said it is important to promote and increase intra-regional tourism as there is a threat to long-haul travelling. Citing rising fuel costs and environmental issues, Lokuhetti believes the government should be encouraging intra-regional travel, rather than bidding for shares in longhaul markets. Giving Malaysia as an example, a country which receives 24 million visitors a year, predominantly from Southeast Asia, the Association President said; “Implementing a bridge between countries such as India and China will help us to attract more tourists. Last year, China has shown a rapid growth in outbound travelling.”
