The areas of Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport will be expanded by up to 1,000 hectares, local media reported the airport’s operator, PT Angkasa Pura II as saying. According to Indonesian news portal tempointeraktif.com, the expansion programme would be part of the redevelopment of the Kota Baru Pantura area, which includes the reclamation of 9,000 hectares of sea. The airport operator’s Director, Tri Sunoko said that the expansion would allow the development of new runways, as the hub prepares for a 10% annual passenger increase over the next six years. The airport is expected to handle 75 million passengers a year by 2017. Soekarno-Hatta currently covers an area of 1,740 hectares and caters for approximately 32 million passengers a year.
