Jakarta’s city authorities have begun planting mangrove seedlings in the city’s northern coastal areas, in an effort to curb the risk of flooding at high times, the Jakarta Post has reported. Hundreds of local students, fishermen and volunteers are reported to have taken part in the event at Marunda Beach, Cilincing.
“We realize that mangroves are declining in Jakarta, especially in North Jakarta. Hopefully, in 10 years, residents will not be afraid of high tides anymore,” North Jakarta Municipality Secretary, Ahmad Lutfi, was as quoted as saying.
