JAL full-year traffic climbs
Japan Airlines has reported a rise in passenger traffic during the 2012-13 financial year.
The airline carried 30.02 million domestic and 7.53m international passengers in the 12-month period ending 31 March 2013, marking growth of 3.6% and 9.9% respectively.
In terms of international markets, the growth was driven by routes to and from Southeast Asia, which saw demand rise 20.6% to 2.84m passengers. Services to North America (+8.8% to 1.69m), Oceania (+8.7% to 143,500) and Korea (+6.2% to 915,500) also increased, but continued tensions with China saw traffic on routes to and from the country fall 4.4% to 1.12m passengers. JAL’s European routes also suffered, declining 2.4% to 58,100 passengers.
JAL added 4.0% extra capacity on international routes during the year, pushing average cabin load factors up to 76.1%. Domestic loads remain weak however, at just 63.1%.
