Japan Airlines (JAL) has applied to the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) to increase the current fuel surcharges on all international passenger tickets issued between 1 August and 30 September 2011.
In April this year, JAL began setting fuel surcharge levels bi-monthly based on the two-month average price, instead of quarterly based on three-month average price, of Singapore kerosene-type jet fuel.
The price of Singapore kerosene-type jet fuel during the two month period of April and May 2011 averaged US$132.66 per barrel. As such, the fuel surcharge on flights has been increased by between US$6 and US$47 per sector. The highest fuel surcharge will be US$335 for flights connecting Japan with Canada, Europe, the Middle East, Oceania and USA. Flights to Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand will be subject to a US$179 surcharge.
