Tourism from Japan to India, which suffered after the natural calamity earlier this year, is now picking up again.Lajpat Rai, president, Lotus Travels, one of the major players in the sector, says that it has taken him some innovative planning and marketing to get back to his old numbers, or near that, from Japan to India in recent months. But he admits that the stay of the tourists has reduced, with number of nights coming down in many cases to only five, instead of the earlier 10.Also, he is selling much more than the traditional Buddhist circuit. Many Japanese have opted to travel with Lotus to the famed Rishikesh, on the Ganga river, base of Himalayas and home to many asharams.Another product expansion has been to Darjeeling, in the north east, and more recently to Ladakh, in Jammu and Kashmir, which is home for treks and monasteries. He has also successfully tried to sell South India – Sri Lanka packages in the Japanese market, including in Tokyo and Osaka.
