Jeddah boosts investment in tourism infrastructure

Jeddah is to benefit from an investment boost in tourism infrastructure, the Saudi Commission for Tourism and National Heritage of Makkah director Mohammad bin Abdullah Al-Omari has revealed.
More than 2,800 new hotel rooms will be built as a result of 11 projects under way, he said, noting Jeddah’s growing appeal as a destination.
He said the commission expected spending in the local tourism sector by local and foreign tourists to hit SR144.3 billion in 2016 compared with SR86.4 billion spent on tourism abroad.
Commission chairman Prince Sultan bin Salman has issued a directive to support investors opening high-quality hotel projects, Al-Omari added.
Jeddah witnessed a 21% increase in local tourism in 2015 versus 2014. The city attracts 29% of domestic tourism for Makkah.
According to an assessment, it was expected that during 2016, local tourism spending would be SR53.5 billion and SR90.8 billion from inbound foreign tourists.
