The cheer heard around Cairns this morning was the welcome from the region’s biggest industry to Jetstar’s announcement of a start date for their four times weekly service between Osaka and Cairns. The first of the scheduled flights will depart Osaka for Cairns on Thursday 1 April 2010. In twelve months the service will provide almost 63,000 inbound seats.
Chief Executive Officer of TTNQ, Rob Giason said “Japanese travel may be in decline to Australia but Cairns remains the number one Australian destination, with 43% of the holiday market from Japan choosing Cairns. The idyllic tropical climate and the superior and sophisticated infrastructure of Cairns, competes on the global stage for the Japanese
mono-destination market.
“Jetstar’s confidence in Cairns as a destination is a credit to the local tourism industry that has persevered through a very difficult year.
“We are living in the new age of aviation in the modern world as we know it today, relying on strong partnerships and share of risk. TTNQ and the local tourism industry, together with Cairns Airport Pty Ltd and Jetstar, and supported by our State and Federal Governments through Tourism Queensland and Tourism Australia, will work together to market the new service. We all believe that the non-stop service from Osaka will be very popular.”
Following the announcement at the Cairns International Airport, the TTNQ Board, selected industry members and corporate partners met with Jetstar for a detailed briefing on the marketing campaign in Japan.
“I congratulate Stephen Gregg and his team, and the board of Cairns Airport Limited on the long term agreement between Cairns Airport Pty Ltd and Jetstar, and for their commitment and confidence in Cairns as a destination” Mr Giason said.
