Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan
Kaohsiung tourism officials are on a mission to drive up interest in southern Taiwan among international tourists in the region. They continued their promotional tour in Singapore on Tuesday having already visited Malaysia where they met representatives of major Malaysian airlines and the tourism sector. Setting up direct Kaohsiung-Penang air services was a hot topic for discussion.
China is the next destination on the agenda. Kaohsiung Tourism Bureau Director General, Chen Sheng-shan, will head there next month to rescue the deflated number of arrivals from China. Though overall tourism trends show significant growth from regional markets over the last two years, hotels in Kaohsiung have reported nearly 10,000 cancellations from Chinese tour operators in the last month.
Focus Taiwan reports that Chen will attend the 2011 North China Travel Fair where he will meet with tourism sector representatives from Beijing, as well as from the provinces of Shandong, Shanxi and Hebei. He will also attend the Strait Travel Fair in Tianjing and Xiamen to meet local tourism businesses and airlines to discuss working partnerships.
