A major development project is being plotted in Cambodia’s southwestern Koh Kong province, the Phnom Penh Post has reported. The scheme will aims to attract tourists and investors to the growing region.
Long Sarin, General Manager of the Souy Chheng Investment Co, told the newspaper that plans were underway for resorts, hotels, residential housing, shopping complexes and infrastructure improvements in the province. The new development – the first of four commercial and residential projects planned for the area - will be built on a 127-hectare area of land outside Koh Kong town.
The first stage of development will reportedly include a US$20 million investment in infrastructure improvements and residential apartments. The second stage will add a luxury hotel and resort, commercial office space and a modern shopping complex.
“We will build a modern city, a hotel, commercial buildings, markets and other shopping facilities, a clubhouse and resort, and a school and hospital,” Long said adding that the project “will not negatively impact local people”.
Koh Khong is located on Cambodia’s southwest coast, bordering Thailand’s Trat province - itself a growing tourism hotspot. However poor infrastructure in Koh Khong has previously made it difficult for travellers, who often bypass the region in favour of the more established resort town of Sihanoukville, further down the coast.
