Korea LCCs go on discount war
Korea’s budget carriers are fiercely vying to attract customers in the off season starting this month by offering discounts on domestic flights, the Korea Herald reported.
Quoting industry sources, it said they were waging a marketing war by offering up to 30% discount on tickets for September.
Jeju Air offers tickets with 30% off for flights flying to Jeju from Gimpo, Busan and Cheongju until this month. The lowest ticket price for Gimpo-Jeju flight is KRW41,200 (US$39) without fuel surcharges and airport fees, Jeju Air was quoted saying.
Yeongnam Air has also set a discounted ticket price: KRW34,640 for Busan-Jeju and KRW44,720 for the Gimpo-Jeju route.
Hansung Air, a local budget airline based in Cheongju, offers tickets for the last plane on every Tuesday this month leaving for Jeju at KRW19,900.
Jin Air offers some tickets for Gimpo-Jeju route at KRW39,000 and KRW49,000. According to the report, the no-frills carriers usually set ticket prices at 20-50% cheaper than regular commercial carriers.
It added that the competition among budget airlines has also prompted major airline companies to tap the low-cost market in recent months.
