A Korean Air crew has been banned from operating flights to Xi’an for one year, after the crew failed to understand a Chinese air traffic controller’s guide during landing on 19 August at Xianyang International Airport in Xi’an.
An announcement by the Civil Aviation Administration of Northwestern China said that on 19 August, the crew on a Korean Air flight bound for Xi’an from Cheongju were not strictly following the guide on approach for landing; meaning the controller had to resort to radar to make sure the plane landed safely.
The oversight body has reached the airline’s management in Xi’an branch and demanded the airline should offer further training to flight crew, particularly verbal English.
Later the crew wrote and explained that they thought the controller was commanding the crew to land on the left instead of right runway. The communications department of Korean Air confirmed there was indeed a misunderstanding and luckily the two sides agreed on this and the plane touched down on the right-side runway.
