Korean Air will launch services to New York aboard its second Airbus A380 from 8 August. The national carrier will use the double-decker jet to operate three weekly flights (every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday) between Seoul’s Incheon International Airport and New York’s John F Kennedy Airport, rising to daily flights in September.
In August the flights will depart Seoul at 1100, arriving in New York at 1155 the same day. The return flight will depart New York at 1400, arriving back in the Korean capital at 1720 the following day. The schedule for September onwards will be confirmed soon.
Like Korean Air’s first A380, which commenced services last month, the second will be configured in a three-class layout with just 407 seats – the lowest of any A380 operator. This compares to the 450 seats on the Qantas A380, 471 on Singapore Airlines, 489 on Emirates, and 538 on Air France – the most seats aboard any superjumbo to-date. The aircraft will feature 12 First Class Kosmo Suites and 301 Economy Class seats on the main lower deck, and 94 flatbed Prestige Sleeper seats in Prestige Class spread out over the upper deck. It will also feature a ‘Duty Free Showcase’ and a bar and lounge area.
Korean Air has ordered 10 A380s, three of which will be delivered by the end of 2011. The remaining five will arrive by 2014. The airline has confirmed Paris and Los Angeles as future destinations for its A380s.
