Korean Air has announced a major diversification of its business, by manufacturing sleds for the South Korean national bobsleigh team.
Ahead of the 2018 Winter Olympics, which will be held in South Korea, the national carrier said it will utilise the manufacturing techniques it was acquired in the aerospace industry to develop a new series of sleds and blades for both the two- and four-person bobsleigh teams.
Development work will start in May, and the airline plans to carry out tests on a prototype sled from November 2014 to February 2015. It will then upgrade the design every year until the 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang.
Korean Air is undertaking the development in partnership with experts from Korean major universities and the University of Southern California in the US.
In taking on the project, Korean Air will become the first airline to manufacture bobsleighs. Currently, the sleds are mainly designed by European automobile manufacturers such as BMW and Ferrari.
