Plans to develop a major new international airport in southeast Korea may be scrapped, local media reports have suggested. South Yonhap News Agency cited unnamed sources as saying that a panel investigating the airport’s feasibility is likely to recommend that the scheme be abandoned altogether as it is too expensive. Two potential sites for the new airport have been earmarked; one would include the development of a man-made island, similar to that of Osaka’s Kansai airport, while the second site under consideration would involve cutting away part of a mountain.
Instead of building a new airport, the sources revealed that Gimhae International Airport, which is located near Busan, may be expanded. Gimhae is currently South Korea’s fourth-busiest airport, and offers connections to domestic and regional destinations. The airport saw a new terminal built in 2007.
The panel’s recommendations on the new airport are expected to be released today or tomorrow.
