Koreans get away for Lunar New Year
The upcoming Lunar New Year is creating a boom for Korean travel agencies, with some registering record numbers, a report said.
Chosun.com said the festival next month allows Koreans to take up to nine days off.
One agency, Freedom Tour, said it had already sold 80% of its holiday package tours to Southeast Asia, China and Japan. The agency’s tours to Tokyo and Osaka were sold out until Korean Air said it would add additional charter flights, allowing Freedom to begin booking more Japanese tours.
Hana Tour was quoted saying that it had booked some 28,000 package tours so far, more than twice the 13,000 tours it registered last year for the same period.
Korean Air was reported saying that its bookings for flights to major resort destinations exceeded 100%. These include Incheon-Bangkok, Busan-Fukuoka, Incheon-Guam and Busan-Bangkok flights.
The report said Asiana Airlines’ flights from February 2 were almost totally booked. There are no vacancies now for flights on that date to Beijing, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Los Angeles, and New York.
The report said airlines were having a hard time meeting demand despite the fact that fares are some 20% more expensive than usual for February 5 to 11 as it is since it is a peak season.
