Merlin Entertainments has announced plans to expand its Legoland brand in Japan.

Through a partnership with Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, the attraction operator will launch a Legoland Discovery Center in Osaka. Set to open in 2015, the new indoor attraction will be located in the city’s Tempozan Market Place Mall.

It will be designed to offer an “interactive and educational” experience for families with children aged three to 10 years, with features including a brick pool, Lego building classes, a ride, 4D cinema, party rooms and a ‘Miniland’ exhibit with Lego models of famous local attractions.

“The Legoland Discovery Center concept has been a huge success across the globe, particularly as part of a family day out which may also include shopping and eating out together,” said Glenn Earlam, managing director of Merlin’s Midway Attractions Operating Group.

“Given the popularity of the centre in Tokyo [which opened last year] we are confident people will also love the attraction in Osaka.”

The new attraction follows the recent announcement of Japan’s first ever Legoland theme park, which is scheduled to open in Nagoya in 2017.
