Location of Beijing second airport revealed

After seven years of deliberation, the location of Beijing’s second airporthas been decided, according to a Xinhua report, citing Hong Kong-basednewspaper, Ta Kung Pao. The new hub will be developed in Daxing district, inthe south of the Chinese capital.
The newspaper reportedly quoted an unnamed source as sayingthat the National Development and Reform Commission, the civil aviationauthority, and the governments of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei have finallyreached a consensus to build the second capital airport in Daxing, although theplans still needs approval from the State Council or the cabinet.
Previously, Daxing, Tianjin’sWuqing district, and Langfang district in Hebei province were competing for the majorproject.
Daxing district government reportedly declined to commenton the news. However Daxing district Party Secretary, Shen Baochang, wasreported telling media that Lixian town, in southeastern Daxing, had beenearmarked as the best location for Beijing’ssecond airport.
Construction willstart in 2010 and be completed in 2015, when it will be able to handle 60million passengers a year, the report said.
