Bankside, a design-forward hotel, will open in September 2018 on the south bank of the Thames, near the Tate Modern, National Theatre and Borough Market.
Bankside features 161 rooms and suites with ‘white cube’ spaces for meetings and events, co-working areas aimed at producing a creative space for the area, and a restaurant and bar with an outdoor terrace.
The six-storey glass building that houses Bankside is part of the One Blackfriars development from architect Ian Simpson, and décor is by film set producer-turned-interior designer Dayna Lee of Powerstrip Studios.
“We wanted to create a genuine boutique hotel for the modern mindset, with calm rooms and creative public spaces that reflect the vibrant, history-steeped community of SE1,” said Lee, ‘We’ve had fun celebrating the local artistic community including post-kiln pottery drying racks for shelves, kid-leather-covered furnishings conjuring an ‘art school’ experience and punctuating these with lots of luxurious, custom-made features.”
Sustainability is at the core of Bankside’s design, with in-room power-saving elements, rooftop beehives, an aim of zero-waste landfill, sustainably-sourced wood and the use of non- or low-VOC (volatile organic compound) paints throughout.
