The strong passenger numbers turned in by budget airlines last year have led to Parliament’s discussion about Changi Airport Group’s (CAG) plans to meet the higher demand in low-cost travel. The Budget Terminal was recently expanded to accommodate 7 million passengers, up from 2.7 million per year previously. Low-cost carriers (LCCs) also accounted for 23% of Changi Airport’s total passenger traffic last year.Second Minister for Finance and Transport Lim Hwee Hwa said CAG will work closely with low-cost carriers to ensure smooth connectivity between flights and sufficient infrastructure to meet the needs of LCCs.She also assured Members of Parliament that liberalisation of air services within the region continues to give the aviation industry a boost. She added that two multilateral agreements liberalising air freight and passenger services in South-east Asia have come into effect, with a third one expected to be signed later this year. China is also in negotiations with CAG to establish a liberal air services agreement. Ryan Huang.
