Luang Prabang to get new airport

The Laos government is to spend US$80 million on building a new airport in Luang Prabang, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed town in the north of the country. According to a Bernama report, the proposal for the construction of the new airport had been unanimously approved by the Laos cabinet and construction work will commence at the end of this year. Completion is scheduled for 2012.
Khampheng Saysompheng, Deputy Governor of Luang Prabang province, was reported saying that the runway of the new airport would be 2,800 metres long and 45 metres wide, and would cost an estimated US$100 million.
Yakua Lopangkao, Director General of Laos’ Civil Aviation Department, told the Lao news agency, KPL News, that the new airport would replace the existing one, and it would be able to cater to the large passenger planes. He also said the investment in the new airport would be from the Export-Import Bank of China.
