Lufthansa’s Board has approved an order for 12 new aircraft, including two new Airbus A380s. In addition to the superjumbos, the German national carrier will order one wide-body Airbus A330-300, four narrow-body Airbus A320s and five Embraer E-195 regional jets. The new aircraft, which have a combined price tag of approximately EUR1 billion (US$1.4 billion), will be delivered in stages from 2012.
“[This order] is the latest step in our ongoing strategy of deploying a modern fleet in terms of fuel efficiency, operating costs, noise and emissions. At the same time, the additional order for the Airbus A380 and A330 will underpin our plans on long-haul routes in the medium term. Along with the aircraft we have already ordered, which will join our fleet over the next few years, it will increase our ability to take targeted action and respond flexibly to fluctuations in demand or market changes,” said Lufthansa’s CEO & Chairman, Christoph Franz.
Lufthansa has a fleet of eight A380s, with outstanding orders for a further seven.
