Macau tourism authorities have been told to forget growth and focus on value as they lead the travel industry forward.
Experts said that the destination needs more family-orientated tourism products if it is to become a rounded tourism and leisure centre. Only then, can the destination approach the Indian market as it looks to diversify sources of tourism.
Local commentators say that Macau must break away from the one-day visit model that currently predominates, with a more rounded tourist offering. Only then will Macau keep Indian travellers interested for and extended period as they will not want to stay for just a single day.
Connie Loi Kim Ieng, Assistant Professor at the Institute for Tourism Studies in Macau, said that tourism infrastructure should be developed before authorities launch direct flights to foreign destination such as India. “If we don’t have enough offerings, the flight cannot be sustainable. We need to establish our tourism product before we can really attract tourism volume,” she said.
Health and wellness tourism is among the products proposed for development, while more emphasis should be placed on the arts and city culture, critics say.
The Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO) commissioned the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) to help determine future tourism policies and plans required to make the nation a “World Centre of Tourism and Leisure”.
