Budget Airlines opening up across North Asia could be the saving grace for Macau International Airport. Since 2007, the airport has seen a steep decline in air traffic with a downturn in global aviation, the death of a domestic carrier and overall decline in passenger and cargo traffic. This has threatened the feasibility of the facility which, according to CAPA, faced closure just five months ago.
Since then, a turn around has begun thanks escalating operations of low cost carriers across the region and increasing traffic from the Chinese Mainland. Jetstar are even considering thee airport as a base for regional operations. “The three-month rising trend follows 10 consecutive months of year on year declines between August 2010 and May 2011,” stated a CAPA report. The turnaround started in June when the airport recorded 5% growth in passenger traffic, a positive growth rate which has slowly escalated through July to an estimated 8.8% in August. While the signs are good, the total passenger through flow of 396,000 passengers in August is a far cry from the 500,000 passengers processed in April 2007.
