Mainland China continued to provide the bulk of tourists Macau which itself is undergoing massive infrastructure development and is hosting a series of events to draw even more this year.
Macau saw 27 million visitor arrivals last year, a surge of 22.7% over 2006. Almost half were from Mainland China which saw a 24% growth. Together with Hong Kong and Taiwan, they were the top three source markets for Macau. Other top markets were Malaysia, Japan, the Philippines, South Korea, the US, Singapore and Thailand.
There are currently 49 Chinese cities implementing the Individual Visit Scheme, which meant that almost half of those who hopped over to Macau were individual visitors.
