Madrid plane crash kills 153

A passenger jet crashed shortly after take-off from Madrid’s Barajas Airport last night, killing 153 people, CNN has reported. Passengers said they saw flames and then heard an explosion moments before Spanair flight JK5022 came down. 19 people are thought to have survived the crash. The McDonnell Douglas MD-82 aircraft was en route to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. Investigators say the have recovered the flight recorders, but no cause for the crash has yet been established.
