Deputy Tourism Minister Donald Lim Siang Chai said tourists from Malaysia to destinations in north-east China like Heilongjiang province and its capital Harbin were forced to change flights at Beijing before reaching their destinations.
“This is a waste of time and will be uncomfortable to some tourists and sometimes some of them may be reluctant to pick the places to visit,” he was quoted saying by Bernama.
Lim is heading a 20-member delegation comprising ministry officials and tourism industry players to north-east China to attract tourists to Malaysia.
Lim said China was among the ten most important tourist markets for Malaysia.
“In the first seven months of this year, we managed to attract 376,064 tourists from China, an increase of 80.4 percent from 208,474 tourists in the same period last year.
“Tourism Malaysia offices in Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Chengdu and Hong Kong which received strong support from local tourism sector, attributed it to the increase in Chinese tourists to Malaysia,” he was quoted saying.
