Malaysia’s Sunway Hotels & Resorts has unveiled plans to invest more than US$218 million in a three-year redevelopment and expansion plan, aimed at enhancing its collection of hotels across Malaysia, Cambodia and Vietnam.
Due for completion in the second quarter of 2018, the investment includes two new Malaysian hotels – the US$95m, 401-room Sunway Pyramid Hotel West in Kuala Lumpur which opened in February 2016, and the US$37.5m, 351-room Sunway Velocity Hotel in KL, which is scheduled to launch in the third quarter of 2017.
In addition, six of the company’s existing properties will undergo renovation work.
This project includes a US$31.3m revamp of the 549-room Sunway Pyramid Hotel East in KL, and other renovations at the 439-room Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, the 25-villa Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat in Ipoh, 138-room Sunway Hotel Phnom Penh, and 145-room Sunway Hotel Hanoi. The Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre in Malaysia will also be upgraded.
“This substantial reinvestment is the largest expansion plan for Sunway Group’s hospitality division in recent years. We are looking to support the region’s increasingly robust business exchange, corporate travel and leisure tourist markets,” said Sarena Cheah, managing director of Sunway’s property division in Malaysia & Singapore.
Upon completion of the project, Sunway will own and operate a total of 11 hotels across Southeast Asia.
Albert Cheong, CEO & group general manager of Sunway Hotels & Resorts, commented; “Reinvention and innovation of our businesses has been core principal of the Group, and we are pleased to continue developing the type of engaging products and services that our guests and business partners have come to anticipate and expect. The hospitality division has drawn on substantive data and consumer insights for the preparation of the refurbishment and upgrading programmes.”
