Oman’s Air’s request to commence direct flights to Manila has been approved, in line with capacity improvements at Manila airport.
The Philippines Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) had denied Oman Air the approval last June because of limited infrastructure at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila, however expansion work at the airport’s Terminal 1 has paved way for the flights to operate.
Jose Angel Honrado, general manager of the state-run Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), said the approval has been given to requests from Oman Air and Garuda Airlines to operate at NAIA Terminal 1, which is currently undergoing a US$26.5mn expansion and is expected to be readied by 2015.
CAB had informed Oman Air last year that the gateway to the region’s fastest-growing economy was already congested. “We are denying foreign airlines such as Oman Air and Jet Airways. It’s not that the market is becoming less vibrant. The reason is due to the limited infrastructure,” a senior industry official told newspapers in the Philippines.
