Marriott International has signed a joint venture agreement with golf course operator Mission Hills to develop Ritz-Carlton and Renaissance Hotels on China’s Hainan Island.
With a total investment of CNY1.3 billion (US$206m), both hotels will open in the second quarter of 2015. It will be the first golf hotel project operated by Marriott in the Greater China region.
“The Ritz-Carlton will offer 180 rooms and 20 villas whereas the Renaissance will have over 300 keys. It will be the icing on Mission Hills’ Haikou development of a township of 300 shops and Hainan’s first ever real ice skating. Our partnership will yield both economic and cultural benefits to the local tourism industry, while offering guests the ultimate golf and holiday experience,” said Dr Ken Chu, Chairman & CEO of Mission Hills Group.
Simon Cooper, President & Managing Director of Marriott Asia Pacific, added; “Hainan represents a massive growth market for the hotel industry, and it’s a market which Marriott International is very keen on. Mission Hills’ vision is impressive, and we look forward to our groundbreaking partnership providing visitors to Mission Hills Hainan.”
Currently under construction on Hainan Island, Mission Hills Haikou is a mixed-use complex that will contain 22 golf courses, luxury hotels and other facilities. It will be the second largest golf complex in the world, measuring 80km² – 1.5 times the size of Manhattan.
