MAS plane from Singapore catches fire

A Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Boeing 737 from Singapore caught fire during its descent at the Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas yesterday afternoon, prompting an emergency landing.Nobody was injured and all 83 passengers and seven crew members disembarked safely from MH674, which was scheduled to land at 12.15pm. It aborted its descent when a series of small explosions was heard from the right side of the plane, and flames were seen. The pilot then decided to opt for an emergency landing.According to passenger accounts, the pilot circled the airport once and managed to extinguish the flames before landing safely at about 12.30pm.Penang Airport’s senior manager Abdul Wahab Mohd Yusof said the runway was closed for 20 minutes while the aircraft was towed to the bay.It reopened at 12.50pm.An MAS official in Singapore told MediaCorp that both engines malfunctioned and the plane was not able to continue its flight to Langkawi. She was not able to say if there were Singaporeans among the passengers.Passengers headed for Langkawi had to catch a flight to Kuala Lumpur, and then to the island resort off Penang.
