Mass evacuation at Brisbane airport

A security error at Brisbane airport yesterday caused thousands of passengers to be evacuated, news.com.au has reported. Security staff at the airport’s Qantas domestic terminal reportedly discovered that a number of passengers had passed through gates without proper screening. As a result, several thousand passengers were forced to leave the airport and return through security checks, delaying not only Qantas services, but those of Jetstar and Virgin Blue as well.
“A number of passengers went through the Qantas screening point without being screened,” Brisbane airport spokesperson, Rebecca McConochie, said. “There was too many of them for it to stay isolated to the Qantas domestic terminal, so we had to evacuate the entire terminal.”
McConochie added that it took about two hours to rescreen the passengers, some of whom had been already aboard their planes waiting on the apron. Approximately 20 flights were immediately affected, but more were likely to suffer.
“That (delay) will certainly have a knock-on effect throughout the night,” McConochie said.
