The number of passengers travelling with Middle East carriers surged in September by 15.8% compared to a year earlier, according to the latest data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
The September global average was up 5.3% year-on-year, down on August’s 6.3% increase.
“Airlines in the Middle East continue to benefit from strength of regional economies as well as expansion in export orders that support international business activity and business-related premium travel,” mentioned IATA.
Middle East passenger growth rose ahead of capacity, which increased by 14.9% in September, while load factor climbed 0.6% to 78%.
The airline trade group also said that “business confidence in the UAE has started to pick-up again after a pause in improvements in the early second quarter.”
Globally, Asia Pacific airlines reported the second strongest September passenger growth of 4.8% compared to a year ago, below a capacity increase of 7.2%. Load factor dropped 1.7% to 76.2%.
Africa airlines recorded the weakest growth among regions, 1.8 per cent, which IATA said cannot be attributed to the Ebola outbreak because affected markets “comprise a very small proportion of overall African traffic.”
