Chinese investors are reportedly planning to develop the Golden Triangle area of northern Laos, in a US$68 million project. Lao news agency, KPL, has reported that the Dokgniew Kham Company is hoping to construct a hotel, casino, golf course, restaurant and shopping mall on an 800 hectare plot of land in the region, which borders Thailand and Myanmar. The Laos government has reportedly given its approval to the project.
A former major opium-growing region, the Golden Triangle is now a major tourist hub in Thailand, with luxury hotel groups such as Anantara and Four Seasons locating resorts in the area, along with several locally-owned hoteliers. Myanmar has also tapped into the areas tourism potential, with the Paradise Casino Hotel, on the banks of the Mekong River, having opened in 2000.
The Laos third of the region however, remains a largely undeveloped area. The Dokngiew Kham is expected to be complete by 2011.
