Meliá Hotels International has continued its rapid expansion in Indonesia with the signing of a new upscale resort on Gili Tangkong, a pristine island off the coast of Lombok.
Scheduled to open in 2018, Meliá Lombok Tangkong will be set on sandy beach overlooking the Bali Sea. It will offer 40 hotel rooms and 65 one- to three-bedroom villas, some of which will be built on stilts over the sea. There will also be a selection of private pool villas.
Facilities at the upscale resort will include a spa overlooking the sea, several bars and restaurants, a swimming pool, hilltop viewing deck, yoga and meditation areas, a helipad, marina, and sports and entertainment facilities. There will also be a banqueting hall for the MICE market.
Tangkong is a small 15-hectare island located off the west coast of Lombok. It is accessible only by boat from Lombok, which in turn is connected to Jakarta, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur via the new Lombok International Airport. Melia will become the first international resort on Gili Tangkong.
The addition of the Meliá Lombok Tangkong marks the latest stage in the Spanish hotel group’s Indonesian expansion strategy. The company currently operates five hotels in the country, located in Bali, Jakarta and Yogyakarta. But it has a further nine properties in the pipeline, including hotels in Bandung, Surabaya and Bintan.
Elsewhere in Asia, Melia currently operates properties in China, Malaysia and Vietnam, and has unveiled plans to launch in Thailand and Myanmar.
