The melting of glaciers in the Himalayas is threatening the lives of over a billion Asians, according to a Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF) report. ChannelNewsAsia reported Prashant Singh, who heads-up the WWF’s ‘Climate for Life’ campaign, as saying that if a deal cannot be reached at this week’s Copenhagen summit, “most glaciers will be gone in 40 years as a result of climate change” – a potentially devastating scenario for the 1.3 billion people living downstream of the region’s nine largest rivers.
“The deal reached at Copenhagen will have huge ramifications for the lives of hundreds of millions of people living in the Himalayan drainage systems who are already highly vulnerable due to widespread poverty,” Singh was quoted saying.
