Flight delays have been experienced across China this week, due to what is reported to be a series of military exercises.
The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has issued a directive to domestic airlines to limit the number of flights they operate, as the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) takes over much of the country’s airspace to conduct military drills.
The Beijing News reports that delays have already been experienced at 12 airports in central and eastern China, including Shanghai two airports and other key hubs in Hangzhou, Nanjing, Wuxi, Hefei, Jinan, Qingdao and Wuhan.
The Shanghai Daily reported separately that nearly 200 flights were cancelled at the city’s Pudong and Hongqiao airports on Monday. The Shanghai Airport Authority did not give any reason for the delays, while air traffic controllers were reported saying that the disruptions were due to “air traffic restrictions.”
Meanwhile, the state-run People’s Daily reported this week that the PLA will hold 10 live-fire drills across the nation from July to October, in Nanjing, Shenyang, Guangzhou, Beijing, Chengdu and Jinan.
