Millions of Indonesians travel home for holidays

More than 3.5 million Indonesians have travelled back to their hometowns by air in advance of the Idul Fitri holiday period, which officially began on Wednesday. Local news portal kompas.com reported the country’s Transportation Ministry as saying that 2.06 million people took to the skies on Tuesday, adding to the 1.50 million plane journeys taken on Monday.
The ministry also recorded that 1.96 million people took to Indonesia’s roads, while 542,800 people travelled home by train and 408,400 by ship. Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country, home to more than 238 million people.
