The fifth UNWTO Ministers’ Summit, being held at the World Travel Market (WTM) 2011, will look at how the travel and tourism sector can consolidate following the recovery from the global economic crisis. Tourism ministers and industry leaders attending the 8 November summit, entitled ‘How Tourism Can Prosper Following the Global Downturn’, will discuss and hopefully agree actions and principles the sector should take moving forward. According to the WTM, the 2011 Ministers’ Summit is set to be the biggest yet with almost 200 ministers and aides expected to attend. Topics on the agenda include the impact of fiscal consolidation and increased taxation in Europe, the effects of the developments in the MENA region on tourism, technology and new booking patterns, and the growing importance of emerging markets. “The UNWTO Ministers’ Summit at the World Travel Market is a key moment for us. It constitutes a unique platform for debate between the ministers of tourism and between the public and the private sector,” said Taleb Rifai secretary-general at UNWTO. Previous attendees include chief executives of TUI, Thomas Cook and Co-op Travel.
