Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts has signed a management contract for a new resort in Koh Samui, as it embarks on a major expansion plan in Thailand.
The Swiss hotelier will take the reins at The Passage Koh Samui Resort, which will be rebranded and relaunched in November 2014 as the Mövenpick Resort Laem Yai Beach Samui. The property will also undergo a refurbishment to add 23 new deluxe rooms and upgrade the existing amenities.
The new beachfront resort becomes the third Mövenpick in Thailand, following two existing resorts in Phuket, and the company is planning to increase its Thai portfolio to five hotels next year and seven by 2017.
“This region is a significant growth sector for our brand, with the country seeing a 19.6% growth increase in tourism for 2013,” said Andreas Mattmüller, Mövenpick’s chief operating officer for the Middle East & Asia. “We believe our resort on Laem Yai Beach is a great asset for us and offers huge potential.”
Following the Samui launch, Mövenpick intends to open new properties in Pattaya and Chiang Mai next year. And the company’s Thai portfolio will expand even further in 2017, with plans to open Mövenpick’s first properties in Hua Hin and Chiang Mai.
