The problem of space at Mumbai’s Chatrapati Shivaji International Airport is causing a potential security threat to aircraft, The Times of India has reported. With space plane parking spaces at a premium, residents in the Kurla Kalina area of the city can get up close and personal with the stationary aircraft, as they park within metres of the airport’s perimeter road.
The Times has report said that on Saturday, an aircraft belonging to a domestic Indian carrier was parked so close to the compound wall that people stopped to take photographs of the plane.
Explaining the space problems they are facing, a spokesperson for a Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd said, “Because of increasing air traffic, we have to create more space for planes. In the process, we have to create more parking bays.”
Naturally with planes parked so close, and potentially within easy reach from public roads, security is a concern - especially in India, which has been targeted by terrorists in recent times. However for the local police, it is the potential for disruption of traffic flow on local roads that is more of a concern.
“As this road is very narrow, the flow of traffic has been adversely affected in the last three days as people are stopping by to see the aircraft,” a traffic constable was quoted as saying.
