The Mumbai police have passed an order asking all city hotels starred four and above to shut their bars, restaurants and discotheques at 1.30am. Hotels starred four and above had the right to serve liquor and operate dance floors till 3am, however Mumbai police have used their non-existent fight against terror as a reason to bring the curfew hour forward, spreading gloom in the hospitality industry as well as among its patrons. The force which is struggling to make a breakthrough in the 13/7 serial blasts case and has tied itself in the 11/7 train blasts case, has told the hospitality industry that the recent terror attacks have forced it to bring forward the curfew hour.
Starred hotels run their food and beverage services at their coffee shops till 3am by dint of the permission granted by the state industries department under the Mumbai Shops and Establishment Regulations of 1948. Hoteliers affiliated to AHAR, an association of over 7,000 hotels and restaurants in the city, said bringing the curfew order forward was not in the interest of society at large.
“We can understand police taking action against anyone indulging in any illegal practice but a blanket order does not serve any purpose. All these hotels have licenses to keep food and beverage services open till 3am at their restaurants. Mumbai being a financial centre and a tourist hub has to have something for both locals and international tourists,” Sukesh Shetty, Secretary of AHAR told The Times of India.
Kamlesh Barot of the Hotels and Restaurants Association of Western India (HRAWI), which counts 300 hotels as its members, said the association was discussing the matter with the police administration and that officials had agreed that these facilities had to remain open considering the flow of international tourists.
