Authorities in New Zealand have said that they are investigating reports that a kiwi has been found in the Russian port of Sochi. The BBC reported that it is unclear how the rare flightless bird managed to travel 16,000km from its native New Zealand to be found in a garden in the Black Sea resort town. An expert was reported saying that despite their rarity there was no illegal trade in kiwis as they are shy and hard to handle.
“This is such a strange story, I’m shocked. It baffles me because kiwis are nocturnal and very shy… I’ve never heard of a black market involving kiwi,” Paul Kavanagh, Senior Officer at Queenstown’s Kiwi Birdlife Park, was reported telling Radio New Zealand. “If you don’t know how to handle one, they can be very aggressive,” he added.
Yes, it’s strange that smugglers changed from their usual trade in placid animals, such as rhinos and tigers…
