India’s Nabakalebar Festival, which will be held this year for the first time since 1996, will be promoted as part of the country’s Incredible India campaign.
The Indian government has confirmed its support for the festival following a recent meeting headed up by Dr Mahesh Sharma, Minister of Tourism, Culture & Civil Aviation.
Dr Sharma confirmed that the Union Tourism Ministry will promote the Nabakalebar Festival in international markets, under the nationwide Incredible India campaign.
Funding of INR500 million (US$7.9m) has been allocated for developing infrastructure and facilities for the Hindu festival, and commemorative stamp and coin will be produced to mark the event.
The event is also expected to result in the first international flights to and from Bhubaneswar International Airport, in the eastern state of Odisha. Dr Sharma said the first flight is likely to connect Bhubaneswar with Abu Dhabi.
The Nabakalebar Festival is an ancient Hindu ritual that is held in every year that includes an extra ‘Ashadha Masa’ month, according to the Hindu calendar. This last occurred 19 years ago. This year’s celebrations take place on 10 July.
