The long awaited Navi Mumbai airport took a step closer to realisation on Monday when it received vital environmental clearance, but not before it was forced into 32 compromises by the Environment and Forests Minstry. It will displease environmentalists that before becoming operational, 615 hectares of mangrove parks will have to be developed. However a new airport is essential for industry growth and sacrifices must be made. The urgency of the new facility is felt because of the saturation of existing infrastructure and scrapping plans in favour of a new site would further delay the project by several years. The bidding process will start within one year, however it is still not clear if the project will be implemented in two phases, as Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel wants, or in four phases, as Chief Minister Pritivraj Chavan has suggested. The INR8,722 crore project aims to cater to 10 million passengers in first year of operation and 40 million by 2030.
