The government of Nepal has announced plans to abolish the climbing fee for Everest climbers for 2010 and 2011. According to the Nepal Association of Tour Operators (NATO), the move is part of a series of measures the country is undertaking to boost mountaineering tourism, including a 50% reduction in the climbing fee for Mount Dhaulagiri. The Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA), NATO and other tourism-related associations, have welcomed the government’s decision to exempt the fees. Nepal has already issued high peak climbing permits to 80 expedition teams for this spring season, including several for Mount Everest.
